This study focuses on the banking community's use of the Internet as a tool to communicate the Y2k problem to their publics. Considering the potential threat of Y2k to infrastructure functioning and data integrity, the banking industry established a Y2k crisis management plan five years ahead of the 2000 date and communicated efforts to achieve compliancy with various sectors of the public such as customers and investors.
Due to the ability of organizations to use the Internet to reach a large audience with in-depth information in a responsive fashion, this technology was an ideal tool to communicate Y2k compliancy efforts consistently over a period of time. This new era of digitally-based communications requires that the Internet be used not only for information distribution but also to help people understand, communicate and respond to each other. To successfully explain the Y2k crisis, organizations needed to build a site that addressed public concern, provided information online in a timely manner, and acted as a reference for progress and solutions.
