Companies and nations around the world are racing to invent, develop, and market new products and services—at an ever-increasing pace—leading to more and more focus on innovation and how to foster it. This symposium will explore how new developments in information technology and communications are enabling innovation to occur online, across national, corporate, and organizational boundaries. Social media are connecting people to each other, enabling them to share ideas and information more quickly. Crowdsourcing is enabling researchers and corporations to tap the time and talent of tens of thousands of people to do everything from classify galaxies to decipher protein structures to make more accurate street maps. The Cloud computing is enabling teams to collaborate more effectively and analyze gigantic data sets. Virtual worlds, such as Second Life, are providing a new platform for brainstorming, training, and simulation.

9:10 – 10:20 AM – Livin’ Online – The Internet as a Place
Moderator:

Ask most 50-year-olds about the Internet and they’ll mention “sending e-mail” and Web pages. They see the Internet as a means for delivering information—a substitute for the postal system, brochures, and maybe television. Ask a 15-year-old about the Internet and they’ll talk about “hanging out with their friends” in an online game or online chatroom or Skype, in much the same way they hang out at the shopping mall. Companies and organizations are starting to realize that the Internet is a place for collaboration and community—not just communication and content.
