GENEVA, SWITZERLAND

INFORMATION SESSION
NOV. 8, 2007 White Gravenor 201A 4:45-6 P.M.

Geneva and the Jet d'eau

Why Geneva?
As the hub of international governance, Geneva is ideally located for the study of global governance and international organizations. Students will participate in discussions and lectures led by international organization staff and delegates who are leading experts and practitioners in their fields. Geneva students will visit various international organizations, watch international conferences in progress, hear perspectives from top officials not shared with the public, and get a behind-the-scenes understanding of how and why people make global governance happen in Geneva.

Students will attend class for the first two weeks with people from all over the world, many of whom are diplomats, representatives from international organizations, representatives from various countries - all looking to share ideas and learn from each other. Students will also be exposed to perspectives not expressed as often in the U.S., and thus, so students will come away with a broader and more wholistic understanding of issues at play in gkobal governance.

The program is priced competitively, so students can earn six credits for less than the cost of six credits taken on the Georgetown campus during the academic year.

Program Overview and Information

The program covers the following areas of study over the course of four weeks:

The four-week intensive program will be hosted by the Graduate Institute of International Studies (known by its French acronym, HEI). The program will look at global governance broadly for the first two weeks, focusing on issues such as economic integration, human rights, and international organizations. Class will be taught by various HEI faculty and prominent lecturers and experts.  In the last two weeks, the program will focus on technology’s role in global governance, covering issues such as intellectual property and creative industruies.  Class will be taught by Georgetown Professor J.P. Singh.

HEI’s proximity to the World Trade Organization (WTO), International Telecommunications Union (ITU), World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO), and other United Nations (UN) agencies will allow students the unique opportunity to tour and hear speakers from these organizations.

Competitive internships at WTO are available for a few students after finishing the program. Students who wish to apply for an internship must apply by the internship application deadline of December 03, 2007.

Dr. JP Singh, Associate Professor at CCT, serves as the Program Director.

Costs

The program fee for Summer 2008 is $7,400.  The fee includes tuition, housing, health insurance, some meals (including all breakfasts), and excursions, and public transportation within Geneva.  Airfare to/from Geneva, passport fees, most additional meals, and other individual expenses are not included in this fee. A single room option can be requested but will depend on room availability.  The cost, approximately $1,500, is in addition to the regular program fee.

Funding and Scholarships
For information about scholarships and financial aid, check the Office of International Programs' website.

If you receive federal financial aid, contact your financial aid counselor in the Office of Student Financial Services to ask about a funding plan for a summer course of study.

Internships
The World Trade Organization is offering a limited number of competitive internships for students who complete the CCT Summer Study Abroad Program. These opportunities will start after classes end (July 18) and go through the month of August. Internships are unpaid. Internships will be in the Economic Research and Statistics Division of the WTO. Specific research projects will be identified in mid November.

If you are selected to intern at the WTO, a WTO researcher will be in touch with you via email at the end of January to indicate the project you would be working on and the work that would be expected from you. The student and WTO researcher must both agree on the terms of the work to formally approve the internship. At the end of the internship period, students will also receive an evaluation of their work from the WTO.

In order to apply for an internship, you must submit the following items, in additional to the regular application requirements:

Since the internship starts after the summer classes end, housing, food, transportation and other related costs for the internship period are not included in the regular program fee and will be the student's responsibility to pay and organize. However, CCT can assist internship students with finding inexpensive housing options.

Accommodations
Students reside in shared rooms at the Residence Mont Blanc Hotel, which is within walking distance to the HEI campus, as well as shops, cafes, bars, a street car stop, and the main train station.  Two to three students will share a room, all of which have kitchens. There are options for single rooms, but this arrangment will cost approximately an extra $1,500 (in addition to the standard program fee and is pending space availability). If you are interested in the single room option, contact Heather Kerst at kersth@georgetown.edu as soon as possible.

Student Comments

Here's what a couple students from last year's trip to Geneva had to say about the program:

"Before Geneva, my concept of the World Trade Organization, the World Intellectual Property Organization, the United Nations, the International Telecommunications Union, and other international institutions was nebulous to say the least. However, after visiting these institutions and watching them in action, I was able to develop a clearer concept and understanding on how international policies are created and implemented. The exposure to live and current issues was fascinating to witness firsthand and observe how negotiations over complex and contentious issues are carried out amongst country representatives."

- Alex DeJong, CCT '09

"Here are some of the things I loved about the trip:

- Alaina Harris, CCT '07

"I felt like I really got a feel for the city life and how these international organizations work. I felt really lucky to be in such a beautiful city and have access to some of the greatest minds in these international organizations.
Another perk was being in class with students from all over the world. It was really beneficial to be exposed to so many different opinions that I hadn't considered before."

- Kalliope Kokolis, CCT '09
