Claire Navaro joined the CCT graduate program in the fall of 2009. Claire graduated from Ohio University in Athens, Ohio, in the spring of 2008 with degrees in both magazine journalism and Spanish. As an undergrad, Claire focused her senior thesis on the way that cultural beauty ideals are both compounded and enforced through international magazine literature. Her project focused mainly on the cultural sensitivity (or lack thereof) displayed through the advertisements and editorial content of foreign versions of U.S.-based magazines. After graduation, Claire spent the 2008-2009 academic year living in a small town in southern Spain teaching English and learning Andalusian culture.
Claire's initial interest in CCT was the uniqueness of the program. The ability to combine both her interests in cultural studies, as well as the power of the written and spoken word, led her to choose Georgetown University as her graduate school. At CCT, Claire will focus on cultural issues and how new media and technology have changed the way that different societies interact. Armed with CCT's staff and resources, Claire hopes to look at international business models and see how they have (or have not) incorporated the need for cultural sensitivity within their marketing and media plans.
The CCT curriculum will enable Claire to develop her knowledge of intercultural communication and the importance of recognizing that the world (and its people) is now connected, every minute of every day.
