An Overview of the PhD in Communication Program at American University

Professor Kathryn Montgomery, Director of PhD program from American University will be introducing our CCT community to their new PhD program in communication. ICPSR: The Story of How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love the Math
Presented by current CCT second-year student, Samanta Fried

Hear the tale of one girl’s quest to understand quantitative methods in interdisciplinary research–and the conceptual and mathematical intertwining of these methods. CCT Student Samantha Fried will make a brief presentation on her experiences this past summer at the Interuniversity Consortium for Political and Social Research (ICPSR)–a month-long, University of Michigan-based applied statistics program–and the amazing things she learned there. How to Apply for PhD Programs and Academic Conferences

This workshop is for students interested in applying to PhD programs or academic conferences (or both!). Profs. Turner and Meltzer, along with other CCT faculty, will share insights on applying to PhD programs, including how to engage with and valuate PhD programs and potential advisors–and how to “package” an interdisciplinary master’s program. They will also share insights on finding, applying to, presenting at, and networking at academic conferences. Students applications for CCT conference travel grants are due October 1st. This session outlines the collaborative efforts of the team mounting the first Georgetown MOOC that will educate over 20,000 students in over 150 countries. From proposal to launch join us as we share the journey of this education experiment. Never compromising on quality and focused on a learner centered experience we have caffeinated and laughed our way through an intense summer of production. We will share perspectives on lessons learned and reflect on the ongoing efforts to create best practices for producing massive online open courses on the hilltop. How to Conceive, Propose, and Write a Thesis
Led by Prof. Matthew Tinkcom

This workshop is for students aiming to conceive, propose, and write a master’s thesis in partial fulfillment of CCT degree requirements. Prof. Tinkcom and other CCT faculty will guide you through steps of focusing your topic and research question, finding and working with an advisor, developing your thesis proposal, enrolling in the Thesis Colloquium course, benchmarks for completing and presenting your thesis, and considerations for interdisciplinary research.
