Siobhan Cooney
Siobhan is a part-time Communication, Culture & Technology (CCT) student and full-time Georgetown employee. Get to know her, and why she chose the master’s program.
Why CCT
What was your career before you started CCT? What drove you to pursue an M.A.?
I first came to Georgetown as a full-time communications associate in 2022 right after I finish my undergraduate studies. I knew that I wanted to pursue a master’s degree, but it was just a matter of finding the right program. My coworker (now friend) was a CCT alumnus, and between talking to him and attending information sessions, I quickly realized that CCT was the perfect fit for me. The interdisciplinary, self-guided design of the program has allowed me to foster my passions, explore new subjects and really take ownership of my graduate experience.
How has CCT supported you in this process?
Balancing full-time work and part-time students is daunting, but I’m glad I don’t have to do it alone. My advisor, Dr. Turner, has been such a great resource since before I even arrived at CCT. I’m so grateful for her insights, mentorship, and compassion. I also couldn’t do it without the support of my classmates and friends, both in my cohort and in other years. We all want everyone to get the most out of CCT, and that community keeps me going everyday!
Balancing Academic and Professional Pursuits
How do you balance your academic and professional life?
It’s all about mindset. I’ve learned to take things one week at a time to help myself to not get overwhelmed and adapt to shifting priorities while juggling multiple deadlines. I’m also fortunate that my colleagues in my office are incredibly supportive of my education and are always willing to help me!
