CCT is excited to feature Chelsey Li (’25) and Luxi Yang (’24) as they discuss their experience in the Fall 2023 Tech Commercialization Internship Program.
CCT Students Chelsey and Luxi were both selected for the Fall 2023 Georgetown Technology Commercialization Internship Program, a program that engages participants of various academic trajectories in all aspects of Intellectual Property management, technology commercialization, and entrepreneurship. Interns have the chance to work hands-on in the areas of patenting, prior art searching, technology evaluations, market analysis, competitive landscape research and marketing. Participants have the opportunity to work directly with start-up creation and venture creation
Luxi spent her time in the program working on helping Georgetown Medical students trademark their work and protect their intellectual property. Her research interests revolve around statistics and market analysis, as well as the intricate connections between technology and the process of commercialization. She is dedicated to building bridges between these areas of study, aiming to shed light on the interplay between technology and the commercialization ecosystems.
Chelsey worked on various projects during her time in the program under the Mentorship of Monita Tarazi, a Marketing Manager in the tech commercialization program who Chelsey says gave her invaluable advice about the marketing industry and practical knowledge about working in the field. Like Luxi, she also spent a significant portion of time learning about the life-cycle of the technology commercialization process including market research and patent registration. She was also intent on highlighting the support she received from the Office of Technology Commercialization during her time in the program and was really appreciative of the thoughtfulness that went into planning the internship experience.
Within the program, interns jobs consist of evaluating student projects to see if they are applicable for a patent, and then analyzing the cost benefits of market production and whether companies or independent investors would be interested in mass production– benefitting both the student and the Georgetown University Office of Technology Commercialization. Luxi says that the work is difficult, but she is excited to continue learning and working in the space of licensing research and market analysis.
Luxi’s main project in the program has been working with Georgetown Medical Students studying the antitumor response of ascorbic acid and developing methods to increase the production of stearic acid in E. coli. She says that she “really appreciate[s] this internship because [she] gets to learn the process from creating technology and putting it into the market– how workers turn technology into a product they can profit from.” She says that a variety of her CCT courses, including CCT- 5006, The Fundamentals of Technology with Meg Leta Jones, Fashion Law with Kenya Wiley, and Statistical Methodology with Erica Seng White, helped build the foundation of the skills she’s been honing in the program.
